I Didn't Mean to Haunt You is the third studio album by American musician Quadeca, released on November 10, 2022 through AWAL and DeadAir Records. It features appearances from Danny Brown, Sunday Service Choir, and Thor Harris. The album was preceded by the singles "Born Yesterday" and "Tell Me A Joke"
The vinyl record of the album includes a deluxe release featuring 21 minutes of unreleased tracks.[1][2]
Background and recording
[edit]On March 17, 2022, Quadeca announced that he was "sitting on the greatest ever posthumous album". Some considered this to refer to an album by frequent collaborator Sad Frosty, who had passed away earlier that year. Instead, this was a reference to I Didn't Mean To Haunt You being sung from the perspective of a ghost who took his own life.[3]
Quadeca stated that he had undergone an "evolution" as an artist. He referred to his previous releases as works of a child, including calling his debut album Voice Memos something "made when I was in high school as an insecure fucking kid trying to be cool" Instead, I Didn't Mean to Haunt You was created to make something beyond the "YouTube rapper" moniker he previously held.[3]
Critical reception
[edit]The lead single of the album "Born Yesterday" was released in September of the same year and was described by The Fader as representing a "a significant leap forward" from Quadeca's previous work.[4] Danny Brown's verse on the song "House Settling" was described by Flood Magazine as pushing the song "into the realm of the goosebump-inducing" and further praised the track and album as a whole.[5] The album was released to positive reviews from critics.[6]
